Technology

EduTyping is being used for the first term (October 8 to November 1) to track typing practice minutes (15 minutes per week), words per minute (28 by the end of the year), and accuracy (95%).  All three items will figure into the technology grade in addition to the activities done at school.

The Keyboarding Assessment will be redone the end of February.  We found out the due date had changed and want students to have more practice time.  Free Typing Game is a website students can use to practice on the lessons.  They should set their goal at 30 words per minute.

Utah Core Curriculum for Keyboarding states, "The student will achieve minimum keyboarding competency on one- or two-minute timed writings.
  • Key at a minimum speed of 27 words per minute (WPM) on at least 3 one- or two-minute timings.
  • Key at 2 or fewer errors per minute.
  • Key without using the backspace/delete key on timings."
Sometime between January 23 and February 10 students will take a Keyboarding Assessment.  In addition to their speed and accuracy as described above, students are judged on the following technique:
  • Feet placed on the floor
  • Body centered to the H key with elbows at sides
  • Sit up straight
  • Curved fingers over the home row keys
  • Wrists off the keyboard
  • Eyes on the printed copy
  • Key by touch with correct fingering
  • Key with a smooth rhythm
The Keyboarding for Kids (KBK) online program is available for students to practice at home.  We are encouraging students to master one line from one lesson per day.  Mastery of a line is 3 scores of 28 or higher with no mistakes. For the second grading period which ends March 1, students will need to be through Lesson 30 on KBK to earn an A on the progress part of the Technology grade.  Students with an average of 30+ words per minute on KBK will earn an A on the speed/accuracy part of the Technology grade. Completing all KBK lessons is #13 on Fantastic Falcon.  Students can also earn #27 on Fantastic Falcon on a "fresh read" keyboarding test. We hope parents understand the importance of students being able to keyboard at a reasonable speed and with accuracy as the use of computers and technology is ever-present in our world.
